You can use the following technologies to share data with other programs on the Mac OS.

Apple Event Manager
The Apple Event Manager provides routines that allow applications to send Apple events to request services or information. The Apple Event Manager also helps your application work with object specifier records, classify Apple event objects, and perform other tasks for working with Apple events.

AppleScript for Developers
AppleScript is a scripting language that enables you to control Macintosh applications and system software directly, without the use of input devices such as the mouse or keyboard. The AppleScript Language Guide, Finder Guide, and other documents can help you write scripts to manipulate images, move files, maintain web site content, and provide automation of whole workflows.
